*Knock, knock.* Hello, this your local advertising agency manager and I’m here to tell you all about Nextdoor!

What is it?

Nextdoor is a social media networking platform founded in San Fransisco, California in 2008 and had it’s official launch in 2011.

What is it used for?

This platform is designed for local communities, specifically your surrounding neighborhood. It allows members to post, comment, and share on topics such as local services, safety & security information, events, & the selling of personal items.

How do I sign-up?

You may sign-up using your email or Facebook log-in. Chances are, your neighborhood has a portal set up. When you sign-up and are entering personal details, one of the first things it’s going to prompt for is your address. If your neighborhood does not have a portal set up, you will become the “founder”. Whether you are a founder or not, Nextdoor offers to send out invitations free of charge to the closest 100 residences with an invitation code.

Can I use this as a business?

Once you sign-up and enter the feed, you’ll notice the abundance of individuals asking for recommendations to local services. In the recent years, Nextdoor recognized the need for it and created Nextdoor Business Pages. As a business owner, you’ll be able to see recommendations, track your reach, and reply to recommendations. If you already have a profile, you can claim your business. If you have not done so yet, creating one is simple. To access the business portal, click here. It is really straightforward and only requires answering a few questions and uploading logos, pictures, etc..

How can I advertise as a business?

You can reach potential consumers by creating an event, posting offers, and paying for ads. (The ad option may not be available to your type of business just yet.) Be sure to check the rules here: Nextdoor Guidelines. Besides creating offers, we suggest keeping active on your personal community page by commenting, liking and sharing posts. Keep an eye out for posts pertaining to your type of business. Keep in mind that your business will not be searchable/viewable until you have recommendations from individuals.

Nextdoor, like Facebook, Instagram -and any other platform you may use- is constantly changing to meet the needs of it’s users. It’s never a bad idea to become familiar with new applications and platforms. So go ahead, give it a whirl! You never know what may come of it.
